Despite the Prince of Petworth needing to get involved to solve the Shaw’s ‘garbagecan-gate’ in 2014, the Department of Public Works has a rough job removing approximately 128,000 tons of trash and more than 20,000 tons of recyclables from 110,000 single-family homes and small residential buildings each year. We at District Ninja want to honor these public servants and provide some more insight to DC residents about how the city-wide trash pickup system works. Therefore we built a map that illuminates the 100,000 plus trash picks up that the D.C. Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for on a weekly basis.
DPW collects trash from apartment buildings and single-family homes with three or fewer living units. DPW does not collect from mixed-use residential/commercial buildings or residential buildings with four or more units. Specifically, this map covers DPW’s pick up schedule color-coded by day across D.C.’s 8 wards. Twice-a-week collection occurs in Wards 2 and 6 and parts of Ward 1 while once-a-week collection occur in Wards 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8. The bar chart shows you how many customers are served each on each pickup day or pair of pickup days.
